First Freedom from Hunger Day Festival a Major Success

Freedom from Hunger celebrated its 60th birthday in grand fashion on September 28th by hosting an international festival at its International Center in Davis, CA. More than 300 guests joined staff, trustees, former trustees and over 50 volunteers at the event which included spectacular exhibits of India, Africa, the Philippines and Latin America. Proclamations by the city, county and state were presented to Freedom from Hunger by local dignitaries. Kids had fun racing with baskets of rice on their heads, getting their faces painted with African symbols, and getting their "passports" stamped at stations throughout the festival to document their status as Freedom from Hunger World Travelers. Under a shady tree, groups took turns participating in a learning session, just as women would in our programs, to better understand difficult problems around managing limited food supplies and scarce resources. And just as it is done in the field, the groups were guided toward practical solutions they could take forward.  Entertainment was provided by Haitian singers, salsa dancers and Taiko drummers. In all the fun, the message of conquering global hunger was never missed and many visitors made generous donations and even signed up for volunteer assignments to stay involved. Sponsors generously covered the event costs, and proceeds from a silent auction and raffle ticket sales for a fabulous trip to Costa Rica netted several thousand dollars to support our programs. In the run-up to the event, local press promoted the day and increased Freedom from Hunger's profile in the greater Sacramento region through articles, radio interviews and TV guest appearances. There was more press at the event, with coverage by Sacramento Magazine and the Davis Enterprise.
