Malaria Study Encouraging: Increased Use of Bednets

Malaria is much in the news these days because its impacts on child mortality, family food security and economic stability are devastating. And while much of the news on efforts to fight the disease is not encouraging, Freedom from Hunger's anti-malaria initiative is showing very promising results. An impact study funded by GlaxoSmithKline (the company that also funded our major West Africa Microfinance Against Malaria initiative) was recently completed. The study found that malaria clients were more likely to own and use insecticide-treated bednets-recognized as the single most powerful weapon in the fight against malaria. Our clients are not just sleeping under the nets themselves but, as a result of the education they received, are ensuring that the most vulnerable people (pregnant women and children under the age of five) are also sleeping under the nets. The findings also show significant increases in women's knowledge about how the disease is transmitted and how to treat a child under the age of five with fever. Learn more about the study, the methodology and the findings, by contacting Bobbi Gray at bgray@freedomfromhunger.org.
