Oxfam America

Founded in 1970, Oxfam America “works to end global poverty through saving lives, strengthening communities, and campaigning for change.”  Specifically, Oxfam America works on issues such as Making a Living, Natural Resources, Peace and Security, Equality for Women, Indigenous and Minority Rights and Global Trade.  An affiliate of Oxfam International, which reaches 120 countries, Oxfam America directly works in 30 countries around the world.

Since 2002, Freedom from Hunger and Oxfam America have collaborated to realize the potential of self-help groups.  Initially, the two organizations worked together to design, test and implement Learning Conversations for use by self-help groups.  These learning conversations, a dialogue-based education tool, address issues such as self-help group enhancement, financial savings, malaria, HIV/AIDS and other critical topics.  Later, in 2005, Freedom from Hunger partnered with Oxfam America to implement their self-help group pilot project in Mali called Saving for Change.  The goal of this project is to develop, improve and standardize self-help group implementation materials and tools and to promote self-help groups to reach tens of thousands of women.
