Confronting Malaria in our Community: Together We Can Defeat It! Facilitator's Manual

Malaria is endemic to the poorest countries in the world and causes 300 to 500 million clinical cases and 1 to 2 million deaths each year. Malaria accounts for a large portion of hospital admissions—in some countries close to 50%. Malaria is a particular problem for rural, poor populations because they often lack access to effective ways to prevent and treat it. Malaria also contributes to poverty by reducing the productivity of infected people and their caretakers. Not only is malaria a particular problem for the poor; it also hinders entire countries from achieving economic growth that may be possible in the absence of malaria. The Malaria module gives participants the opportunity to identify their own and other resources in their communities that they can use to confront malaria, assuring that the most vulnerable groups—children under 5 years of age and pregnant women—receive the care they need. By engaging in group activities, participants will: 1. Illustrate how malaria is transmitted. 2. Share the value of using Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) with neighbors and friends. 3. Identify places where nets or ITNs are available. 4. Re-treat a net with insecticide. 5. Develop a plan of action to increase the use of ITNs, especially for children under 5. 6. Identify the four danger signs of serious illness. 7. Commit to referring serious cases of malaria to a clinic. 8. Identify the negative effects of malaria on pregnancy outcomes. 9. Communicate the importance of accurate and complete treatment for the pregnant women and very young children who get malaria. 10. Plan actions to improve prevention and treatment of malaria in the community. This document walks the group facilitator through the various sessions providing narative, discussion questions and activities. A trainer's manual is also available which guides a trainer or trainers through princples of adult learning and group facilitation as they related to the malaria module.
